Main forms of corrosion of building metals
① Uniform corrosion. The corrosion of the metal surface makes the section thin evenly. Therefore, the average annual thickness loss value is commonly used as an indicator of corrosion performance (corrosion rate). Steel in the atmosphere is generally uniform corrosion.
② Pitting erosion. The metal corrodes in spots and forms deep pits. The generation of pitting is related to the nature of the metal and its medium. Pitting erosion occurs in media containing chloride salts. The maximum hole depth is commonly used as an evaluation index for pitting corrosion. Pitting corrosion is considered in pipeline corrosion.
③ Galvanic corrosion. The contact of different metals, due to the corrosion of different potentials.
④ Crevice corrosion. Metal surface in the crevice or other hidden areas often occur due to the difference in the composition and concentration of the medium between different parts of the local corrosion.
⑤ Stress corrosion. Under the combined action of corrosive medium and high tensile stress, the metal surface is corroded and expands into micro cracks, which often leads to sudden breakage. This failure can occur with high-strength steel bars (wires) in concrete.
